The son of the mountain

Young artist Huang Chenglins artistic way

In the summer of 1983, I was born in a small village of about more than one hundred families in Hua Shuikou town, the city of De Hua, Fujian province. Around that village are many great mountains, and their magnificence give me the original accumulation of the art. In the dark, I always sit before the door, feeling the beauty of sunset quietly. This kind of aesthetic feeling has been rooted in the bottom of my heart since then.

My childhood was spent in the small mountainous village, and I was stuck there since I cut my wisdom teeth, therefore I don't know what's the world outside like, only facing the farming work. And my rountine job are just feeding the fowl, digging the potherb, chopping the firewood and transplanting rice seedlings, thus the days passed hard and tamely year after year.

With the development of the society, some people in the village began to become rich, however,  what they brought us was not help but in sult in many ways. The crops in the fields could not give us the hope of changing the life, without any other way out, we moved to the county seat in 1992.

In order to educate me and my younger sister, parents did coolie for others, and with the little money got from hard work, they sent us to school. Parents always told me, you must study hard, only by this way can you stand out one day. When I was in middle school, my interests in the fine arts began to shape gradually. The beautiful picture of the sunset in my brain always appear, and depicting it little by little became the main contents of my artistic lessons of the middle school. My art teacher Tu Jinwang thought highly of me, and always taught me about sculpture. Dehua is the capital of porcelain, where the arts of porcelain were excellent. He taught me step by step from the basic skills of porcelain and sculpture, and in this period he also researched the painting skills. After two years, thanks to my teachers painstaking teaching, I made a lot fo excellent works, welcomed in my school and county.

How time flies, it came to my graduation very soon. In 1999 I failed the access exam for high middle school and I have to leave scool from then on, whitout knowing what I should bo. In order to make a living, I, 17 then , went into the society and looked for a way to earn bread. Because I was too young, no such a company that would hire me at all. Abandoned, cheated, without one penny, slept in the road and the bench in the par but the faith It will be better always encouraged me to fight poverty bravely. When I have no way out, the fate in changing for the better stealthily. I remembered one of my cousin was working in Shanghai, so I contacted him and wanted to go for a try in Shanghai. Being afraid that my parents would be worried about me, I told a lie that I’d like to make sculpture in Shenzhen with my classmates. Thus, I went to Shanghai alone with 400 yuan in my pocket. 3 days later, my cousin introduced me to a company owned by my homefellow. This work didnt last long, but it was the hardest experience I had in Shanghai. I rushed all round every day, hungry and tired, but couldnt get one penny of salary. Without any money, I went all the way from Jingan Temple to the Zoo in 3 hours, 12 bus stops, and 1 yuan for the fare. At that time, full of my mind is how if I find 1 yuan on the ground.

Although the life is hard, but I still didn't give up my dream of art. I insisted on the artistic creation when I was looking for a job. As I growed up gradually, I developed my unique style and works based on my perseverance and the feeling of the life and lives. In my creation of painting and sculpture, I infused my deep missing of the hometown. The unsophisticated county life and the enlightenment of the great mountains, give my work the fresh elements that we couldnt find in Shanghai such a metropolis. In the continuous negation, I surpassed myself. The god was moved, works full of breath of earth was made one after another. In these works, there were telling of tears, irrigation of sweat, sentiment of life and deep love of the hometown. A child from the great mountain, having nothing in the beginning, but now burst in enthusiasm, feeling the times and creating the uniqueness, the hardship in it is bovious. The characters in these works, are very simple, it seems that they are straightforward, but at the same time they are also lively, and of life. They stand, pervade and influence in the metropolis, regardless of the hurly-burly.

What the times needs is not only a pure and exclusive artist, and with the development of the times, we need to explore in the arts continuously. As I researched hard the skills and contents of oil painting, sculpture, and porcelain, after the non-stop production, creation, surpass and experiment again and again, I made a lot of paper sculptures, using my own artistic language and design conception, also infusing the dense flavor of the countryside, developing a style of my own.

The appearance of paper sculpture is just by chance. At one time when I was making a work, looking at the deserted newspaper around, I thought if theses so-called wastes can be used again, and whats more, used in the artistic creation, it will just comply with the policy of saving the energy and recycling the wastes. Moreover, there are still no people who use paper to make sculptures. China has a long history of paper making, why the paper can be only used for painting or writing. So I had the idea of making sculptures of paper. Then I began to make experiments, after countless failures, I mastered the craftsmanship of paper sculpture. In the paper sculpture, the works absorb mordern design conception, blending with abstract arts, boasting ornamental beauty. The paper sculpture has an exquisite appearance and strong flavor of countryside. It can be made out different effects of material and mechanism of granite, copper, cuprum, bronze. Paper sculptuer also has the merits of being not fragile, light, moth-resist and water-proof. It has an active meaning for recycling the wastes and protecting the environments. Thus I got more and more ideas of creating and made a lot of works of paper sculpture, developing my own unique artistic style. Because of this, Shanhai TV station paid a special visit to my workshop and interviewed me, and the MV of interview was broadcast in the gold period.

Besides arts of oil painting and paper sculpture, I have never forgotten I was from the capital of the porcelain. In the field of porcelain that is full of talents, the works made by me has the features of white as snow, bright as mirror, thin as paper and sound as the musical instrumentl, having a big influence in the circle of porcelain in Shanghai. In the past 7 years I made a lot of works. In 2003, I established my own China·Chenglin Arts Center & Porcelain Institution. In 2007 I was invited to be guest professor of the international Calligraphy and Painting School of Beijing College of Foreign Economy.

My works alwys take part in the domestic and abroad exhibitions as the invitations and got awards. I also participated in the individual and associative exhibitions. By now my works have been collected by Chinese, American, Japanese, Candian, Singaporean and Swiss lover of collection.

In May 2007, China ·Chenglin Artistic Center established Shanghai·Artistic Crossing design group as the the center of creating, planning and sales exhibiting of Chenglin Artistic Center, mainly for discovering a group of excellent mordern artists. Emphasizing the originality, technicality and artistry of the works, study and make exhibition plan, plan high profile artistic crossing exhibition, recommend and organise master pieces exhibition abroad, owning a lot of domestic and foreign customers, it also recommends to the circle of collection, hoping to recommend more excellent mordern aritsts. We hope in such a group we can provide the widest mordern artistic stage for the arists. Now Chenglin Artistic Center is playing an important role with a brand-new stance in the creative cultural industry.

We will exert the strong advantages of resources with high efficiency, down-to-earth spirit, conception of surpassing and spirit of creation to make the gold brand in mordern artistic market, being the biggest mordern artistic exchange flagship of the country even the world. Hope heartily the artists would avtively participate in, hand in hand, build up the splendor of mordern art.

The author now is China Craft and Artistic Master, Shanghai Craft and Artistic Master. In 2005, the author was invited to be one of the commissaries of Dunhuang Center China Artists Association, and now is a member of China Sculpture Association, China Sculpture Committee and Shanghai Craft and Artist Association.
